Storage Tips
We know that storing with us often happens during busy and stressful times, like moving house. It’s tempting to quickly load everything into your unit and lock it away. However, taking a little extra time and care when packing your unit can make a big difference. By organising your storage space properly, you can fit more items in, save time and money, and ensure your belongings remain in good condition.
Why do we end up with so much clutter?
Emotional attachment items often carry sentimental value, making it difficult to let them go. These might include gifts from loved ones, souvenirs from unforgettable trips, or family heirlooms passed down through generations. While these items hold emotional significance, they can also contribute to the clutter in your space.
Aspirational clutter We tend to keep things that reflect the person we aspire to be, like exercise equipment for future fitness goals, books we plan to read, or craft supplies for projects we intend to start. Although these items represent our ambitions, they can accumulate and clutter our space if not actively used.
“Just in case” syndrome Holding onto items “just in case” we might need them someday is a common habit. This mindset can lead to keeping unnecessary items, such as old electronics, spare parts, or clothing that no longer fits, creating unnecessary clutter.
Psychological Effects
Stress and anxiety Clutter can overwhelm our senses and cause mental chaos. Disorganised spaces often trigger stress, making it hard to relax and enjoy your home. This can increase anxiety, highlighting the need for a peaceful, organised space.
Reduced productivity A cluttered environment can distract you and disrupt your focus. When your workspace or living area is messy, it’s harder to concentrate on tasks, which can result in lower efficiency and productivity.
Impaired decision making Too much clutter can contribute to decision fatigue. The more items you have, the more choices you encounter daily, from selecting outfits to choosing what to use. This constant barrage of decisions can deplete your mental energy and make even simple choices feel overwhelming.

Here Are Some Helpful Storage Tips:
- Ventilation and Air Circulation: Make it a habit to open your storage unit regularly to check on your contents and to allow air to circulate. This helps prevent moisture build-up and keeps your items in good condition.
- Protect Your Belongings: Place sheets of cardboard or plastic on the floor or over soft furnishings to provide a barrier and protect them from dust or potential moisture.
- Allow for Airflow: Avoid cramming items tightly against the walls of the unit. Leave small gaps between items and the walls to encourage airflow and prevent dampness.
- Prepare Appliances Properly: Ensure refrigerators, freezers, and washing machines are thoroughly dried before storing. Clean ovens and utensils to avoid mould and rust. Store appliances with doors slightly ajar to allow airflow.
- Store Liquids Safely: Keep liquids in sealed containers to minimise the risk of condensation or spills.
- Care for Tools and Machinery: Clean garden tools and garage equipment thoroughly before storing, and wipe them down with an oiled rag. Securely tie tools into bundles. Drain oil and petrol from vehicles and machinery before storage.
- Stack Boxes Wisely: Place heavier items at the bottom of stacks, with lighter items on top. Clearly label your boxes to make locating items easier later on.
- Know What You Can Store: Check your storage agreement for a list of items that are prohibited, such as flammable or hazardous materials, and food.
Maximise Your Storage Space
- Strategic Placement: Place items you’ll need access to frequently near the front of the unit, and store less-used items at the back. Important documents should be stored in clear boxes at the front for easy access.
- Disassemble Large Items: Save space by disassembling furniture like beds and wardrobes. Chairs can be stacked seat-to-seat or upside down on other items. Store large items like mattresses and sofas on their ends.
- Use Transparent Containers: Store small items in clear plastic boxes so you can easily see what’s inside without opening them all.
- Manage Entry and Exit: If you’re regularly moving vehicles or equipment in and out, use timber wedges to bridge the small step at the unit’s entrance.
- Utilise Vertical Space: Take advantage of our racking to organise items and create more space. Ceiling hooks can be used to hang frames, netting, or support lines across the unit.
- Create an Aisle: If possible, leave a central aisle in your unit to make it easier to access items without having to move everything around.
